From The Oxford English Dictionary

refectory ( or in monastic use    refic'tory ) n. Room used for meals in monasteries etc.

  ~ table. Long narrow table.

Cornish Cottage Tables makes or refurbishes Refectory Tables, Farmhouse Kitchen Tables, Coffee Tables and also makes Bread Boards, Chopping Boards, Cheese Boards from solid beech block, occasionally oak, when available.

When making a table or replacing part of a table during refurbishment I use recycled or reclaimed timber. I hope that helps the environment but there's the added bonus that wood with some age to it just has a better colour than new. Pristine, factory items with sprayed on colour and finish will never age in quite the same way.

Sometimes you may find a plugged hole "where it didn't ought to be". Signs of a previous life.

Not all old blemishes are removed, definitely no fake ones are added. Your table should look like you have already had it for quite a while.

I can make a table from scratch, the above still applies.

Hand made. Affordable and simple. Traditional methods. Glued and dowelled joints. Sturdy construction.

Meant to be used, heavy enough to take most knocks. Add your own day to day marks while it's in your care then pass it on to the next generation.

Typically the sizes are 4 x3 (1220 x 915), 5 x 3 (1525 x 915) and 6 x 3 (1830 x 915). The latter can seat 6/8 people comfortably.

Other sizes by arrangement.

Shades can be varied. Legs can be turned or plain. Table edges can be rolled or square as preferred.

Occasionally I have drop-leaf dining tables, usually oak ( Georgian to Edwardian ) to refurbish.

Please contact me for prices or to chat about your requirements. Hand made does not necessarily mean expensive, from as little as £175 ex workshop. (Refectory table 4 x 3 with plain legs).
